Jim graduated from Dorchester High School in 1960. He went to work at Russell Stover out of high school, then to Crete Mills prior to becoming a full time farmer.
In the mid 1960's, through mergers and acquisitions, two firms remained; Traum-Vance-Gerdes Funeral Homes and Nuckolls-Meyer Funeral Homes. In March of 1992, these two firms merged together to form Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Homes and in March of 1999, opened the new and current facility at 2414 "H" Street in Fairbury.
